Our stop between Russia and Estonia, Helsinki was a real treat. Turns out I actually like cold fish on brown bread for breakfast – who knew! We stayed at the Klaus K Hotel and enjoyed perhaps the best accommodations of the trip. The market pier offered a combination of typical farm market fare for locals, souvenirs for tourists and delicious food for everyone. The salmon soup, a milk broth with large chunks of salmon, was particularly popular and absolutely delicious. Harbor seagulls were not at all shy. In fact, outdoor dining was best done behind a net or avian “sharing” was virtually inevitable.

Planning our trip to northern Europe, son Eric and I decided our last stop before heading home would be Tallinn, Estonia. An historic and cultural gem, our decision turned out to be perhaps the best choice of the trip. Flying into Moscow we travelled via train to St. Petersburg and Helsinki. By the time we headed south across the Gulf of Finland on the Linda Line hydrofoil, we arrived in Tallinn a bit weary from two weeks of high-activity touring. Simultaneously stimulating yet relaxing, Old Town Tallinn turned out to be just the right place at the right time.
Hopefully the last occupation – Estonia’s strong and resilient people have been through so much. How sad just a year removed from dedication of the plaque and once again Estonians feel the hot breath of the bear next door.
